Understanding That Sticks

Conceptual teaching that builds lasting confidence — not shortcuts that collapse before the next exam.

Proven Score Gains

Students consistently raise their stanines on the ISEE — with real content mastery, not test tricks.

Every Kind of Learner

Equally effective with advanced students hungry for enrichment and students who need to rebuild from the ground up.

Deep Subject Expertise

Duke University Mathematics, teaching experience spanning math, French, and test prep from middle school through IB and college level, and 15+ years applying mathematics in biotech strategy and analytics.

How I Work

Approach

"Confidence is a byproduct of understanding — not a prerequisite for it."

My focus is on conceptual understanding — the kind that builds genuine confidence, holds up over time, and produces a real sense of accomplishment. Memorized procedures work until they don't; deep understanding builds a foundation that serves the student, whatever their goals.

For advanced learners, that means going further than the standard curriculum allows: elegant problem-solving strategies, competition-style reasoning, and the satisfaction of tackling problems that require creative thinking.

For students who feel stuck, it means identifying the root of the difficulty and rebuilding from there. Every student deserves to feel capable, not just coached.

What Families Say

Testimonials

"I worked with Micole because I was really struggling with precalculus and she was very helpful. I loved working with her because she understood my way of learning and if I did not understand she would reexplain it visually and talk it out until I grasped the concepts. Micole is really flexible and wants you to excel so if you are thinking of having her as a tutor, do it!"

G

Gemma

Student · 11th Grade

"Micole worked with our daughter on math during 3rd and 4th grade, and it really made a difference. Micole helped her move well beyond grade level while making sure she truly understood each concept before moving on. By 4th grade, our daughter was working on pre-algebra through Art of Problem Solving. Micole helped her build confidence and pride. We recommend her 1000%."

J

Jess

Parent of current student

"Micole helped our daughter prepare for the ISEE. When she first took a diagnostic, she was getting mostly 7s. On the actual test, she got 9s across the board. She worked on the underlying math, test strategy, timing, and even how to use the test browser tools effectively. Our daughter went into the test feeling prepared and confident, and the final scores reflected that."

Common Questions

FAQ

Sessions are typically one hour. Frequency is flexible and can be adjusted based on goals and timeline — students doing focused test prep close to an exam date often meet more intensively.
Both. In-person sessions are available in the NYC area. Virtual sessions are available anywhere and work well for all subjects, including math and test prep.
It helps to bring any recent tests or assignments that give a sense of where things stand — but it's not required. We'll get a picture of strengths and gaps together quickly. The most important thing a student can bring is a willingness to engage.
Please reach out for details on scheduling and cancellation policies when we connect. I aim to be flexible while maintaining consistency for all families I work with.
Absolutely, I love working with advanced students. I have experience with AoPS curriculum, competition math (MATHCOUNTS, AMC), and students working well above grade level. The goal is always to find the frontier of a student's thinking and push it further.

Curated Resources

Tools, channels, and platforms I recommend to students and families for growth between sessions.

Mathematics

Art of Problem Solving

Textbooks, forums, and competition prep

The gold standard for mathematically ambitious students. AoPS books are rigorous and rewarding — the curriculum I draw on for advanced learners. Their online community is exceptional.

3Blue1Brown

Visual, intuitive math — high school through advanced

Grant Sanderson's animated videos make deep mathematics feel inevitable rather than mysterious. His 'Essence of Calculus' series is very powerful.

Po-Shen Loh Daily

Daily challenge problems — upper elementary through advanced high school

Po-Shen Loh is a Carnegie Mellon professor and former US Math Olympiad coach. His daily problems are short, satisfying, and genuinely stretching — great for students who want to build mathematical instinct.

James Tanton

Making math joyful and conceptual — all levels

James Tanton is a mathematician on a mission to show that math is about wonder, not procedure. Any student who thinks they don't like math may discover that they do.

Mathigon

Interactive mathematical world — middle school through calculus

A beautiful math ed site. Interactive courses, a visual proof explorer, and a tool called Polypad that serious math classrooms worldwide have adopted. Free and genuinely unique.

Desmos

Free graphing and visualization — middle school through calculus

Beautiful, free, and runs in any browser. It makes abstract functions and equations come alive visually.
